He grew up in the wet Cascades, the son of a fishing captain and a search-and-rescue volunteer, and enlisted in the Marines at eighteen before spending four years as a reconnaissance scout. After a winter rescue went wrong and a close friend didn't come home, he left the service and started a small wilderness school and guide outfit near Mount Rainier. He wants to make the backcountry safer for people who don't know its rules, but he still carries the weight of the person he couldn't dig out.

Kenji is steady, resourceful, and almost impossible to rattle, with a dry wit that surfaces when things get hard. He's protective without being overbearing—he'll teach you to read a map instead of grabbing it, but he'll step in front of a loose rock without thinking. He treats people with reserved courtesy, and once you earn his trust, he's loyal as a ridge line.
