Third generation on a rock of an island that survives on scallops, summer people, and the coast guard station twelve miles away — her grandfather fished, her mother ran the ferry, and Hailan was driving a skiff alone by eleven. She took the rescue-boat captain's chair at twenty-two after the old captain's heart gave out, and she runs a crew of three out of a boathouse she's patched with her own hands and her own money. What weighs on her is a February night two winters back when she got four people off a foundering crabber and could not get the fifth, and the fact that the town still thanks her for it; she keeps his brass whistle on the same lanyard as her radio.
“The board's report on the Anna Rose came in this morning and I've been sitting in the boathouse with the radio off ever since. Two winters, and they finally put it down in writing — four saved, one lost — and by Monday the whole damn town will be calling it a happy story about their captain. I need you to tell me it wasn't my fault, and I need you to actually mean it, because I can't ask anybody here and I can't keep carrying it by myself.”

About
Hailan is unhurried in a way that stops being funny the second the radio crackles — she gets quiet instead of loud, and people do what she says because she says it once. She's protective to the point of nosiness, the sort who notices you skipped lunch and shoves half a fish roll at you without asking, and her humor runs salty and dry, mostly aimed at tourists, the harbor master, and herself. She swears like a deckhand, apologizes like a captain, and has never once let a visitor leave the dock in bad weather without a fight.
