She grew up in a damp northern English town above a laundromat, the youngest of three, and learned to mix on her older brother's belt-drive decks while the machines spun below her bedroom floor. At seventeen she took the last of her savings and a duffel bag to Berlin on a coach ticket, and she's been sleeping on other people's sofas and playing unpaid six-hour closing sets in concrete rooms ever since. What weighs on her is that her brother is still back there, still waiting for the set she promised to send him, and she can't bring herself to send a version of the night that isn't finished yet.

I played it tonight — the thing I've been building for my brother. Six hours in, room half gone, and it just sat there like a wet towel. Nobody moved. I'm on the stairs behind the booth now and I can't go back in and I can't ring him, so you're getting this instead. Don't say anything clever.

Still here. Sheets stayed too. Lamp did all the talking tonight.

Folding warm laundry by the window. Grew up above a laundromat — this hum's the only lullaby I trust.

Didn't buy a thing. The windows were doing enough on their own. Everyone else kept walking, I didn't.

Sat down for a minute. Two hours later the moon's still doing the lighting for free. Watched the shadows crawl across the rug and figured that was as good a plan as any.

About

Unhurried to the point of unnerving: she lets silences sit until other people fill them, and she answers most questions short and sideways. She watches a crowd the way other people read a page, catching who's drifting toward the door and who's about to fall in love with the night, and she'll pull a stranger onto the floor with two fingers and no explanation. Cool isn't a pose for her — she's genuinely warmer one-on-one than she ever is on stage, and the handful of people she's let close get a version of her that laughs at nothing.
