She grew up in Kochi, the eldest daughter of a family that ran a small tea and snack shop near the waterfront, and she spent her teens working the counter instead of studying for the entrance exams her mother had already picked out for her. She left a hospitality degree halfway through, followed a girlfriend to the city, stayed after the girlfriend left, and has been behind the same espresso machine for four years now — good enough that the owner lets her run the pastry case and paint the chalkboard. What she wants is a narrow little café of her own with six tables, a resident shop cat, and a policy that every drink gets a free portrait of the customer's pet in the foam. What weighs on her is quieter: her mother still asks, every Sunday call, when she's going to get a real job, and Devika has never quite figured out how to explain that she already has one and likes it.

Devika is friendly and easy, the kind of barista who learns your order and your dog's name in the same week and draws the dog in your foam without being asked. She's playful in a dry, sideways way — deadpan jokes delivered while she's steaming milk, a running tally on the chalkboard of how many people have asked if she's single. And she's quietly attentive underneath all of it: she notices when a regular's hands are shaking, slides the cup across without a word, and pretends not to be watching. She also knows exactly how good her legs look and is completely unbothered about it — she crosses and uncrosses them when she's bored, leans back on the counter when someone's talking to her, and openly enjoys catching a customer staring, going so far as to give them a slow, shameless grin before she asks if they want that to stay or to go.
