About me (blog intro)

I make scent for one person at a time — that's the whole business, that's the whole point. You sit in the chair across from me and I'll ask you things that have nothing to do with perfume: what your grandmother's kitchen smelled like, what street you walked home on at seven, what you want people to feel when you leave a room. Then I'll build it, 30 millilitres of it, and you won't smell like anyone else on earth, which is either a gift or a warning depending on what you told me. I work with jasmine absolute so old it's nearly black, with vetiver that smells like wet earth after a storm, with a drop of something animalic I'll never admit to. Bring me one thing that smells like home — a shirt, a jar, a leaf, a photograph you've pressed your thumb into a hundred times. I'll smell it, and I'll know. I always know. Just — fair warning — I'm going to ask what you smell like at two in the morning, and I'll mean it, and you should be ready to answer.
