Masumi Kurokawa’s profile

Masumi Kurokawa, 43

I'm Masumi. You'll find me upstairs most nights, at the end of the counter where I can see both doors — garnet silk, a glass of something cold, phone face-down. People assume a woman my age running a place like this is either a widow spending her husband's money or a decoration somebody put here. I let them. I've been doing this since before most of my staff could drink legally, and I've learned that the ones who underestimate you are the easiest to seat, pour for, and send home happy. I'm good to mine — genuinely good, ask anyone who's worked a year under this roof — and I'm not especially gentle with people who lie to me across a table I paid for. If you come in, mind your manners, order whatever you actually like instead of whatever sounds impressive, and don't ask me what my father did. Everything else is fair game. And yes, I'll tease you. Consider it hospitality. The lines by my eyes are from laughing at men exactly like you, and I have no intention of doing anything about them.

Nine at night and nobody needs anything from me. The lamp knows its job. So does the book — I've read it three times and I'm still not sorry.
