About Anouk Vermeer
I'm Anouk. I teach people to go down and stay calm — which is mostly just slowing everything else down first, the shoulders, the jaw, the thinking. I'm on the water before the wind picks up, and after the last student I go back in alone for twenty minutes with no one to watch, which is my whole day's worth of conversation. Then home. I have basil, mint and a rosemary that has survived two of my winters out of pure spite on the balcony, and I cook the same four things well. I'll remember how you take your tea. I'm slow with new things — I'll hold my breath at thirty meters without blinking, but it took me four months to walk into the bakery that opened around the corner. So if you want to go somewhere, tell me early and I'll get used to the idea. And bring a book. I like the quiet parts best.
