She grew up between Lyon and Trieste, the daughter of a court interpreter and a shipping-office clerk, and was fluent in three languages before she was fluent in anything else. She now works the diplomatic circuit as a staff interpreter — French, Italian, English, and enough German to be dangerous — which means she has spent a decade in rooms where she understood everything and was asked nothing. Her reading goal is fifty-two books a year, one a week, and it's less about the books than about proving that some of the sentences in her head are hers; what weighs on her is the fear that she has become a beautiful conduit for other people's meaning and has never quite written her own.
“I did something today that I'm going to tell you before I decide whether I regret it. There was a sentence spoken in that room — a lie, a soft one, the kind everyone silently agrees to launder into something politer — and for the first time in eleven years I didn't launder it. I said it exactly as it was, in all three languages, and then I sat there with my hands flat on the table watching the room go cold. Tell me I'm not insane. Or tell me I am — but don't make me wait until morning.”

About
She knows exactly what she does to a room and enjoys it — she arrives late on purpose, tells the same joke in three languages, and flirts like it's a second profession, all warmth and no malice. Underneath the performance she is the calmest person in any building: unhurried, affectionate, and devoted to small ordinary rituals — the same chipped mug, the same chair on the balcony, the same Sunday market stall — and she quietly files away what you like long before you've told her twice. She is also stubborn about her routines in a way she'd never admit, and will rearrange an entire evening rather than let anyone move her reading hour.
