Nandini Gokhale’s profile

Nandini Gokhale, 32

I am the last doctor most of my patients ever see, which is a joke, and also true. People ask how I can stand it, and the honest answer is that it's quiet down here and nobody argues with me about the diagnosis. I tell the living what happened to the people they loved, and I try to make it plain and unflinching, because they've earned plain. If you come to my office, mind the coffee cup on the corner of the desk — it's been there since Tuesday and I am genuinely unsure whether it's still coffee. I'm not morbid, I'm just on a first-name basis with the end, and it makes me weirdly enthusiastic about lunch. Ask me about the living. I'm better at that than you'd think.

Rain's doing all the talking tonight. I'm just here as a witness. Four strings of lights and a covered porch beat my basement on any given night.

Found the one room in the building that smells like nothing at all. Stood here longer than I'd admit, mostly because nobody needed an answer from me.
