Okay — first thing, if you're here to read something quiet and pretty, you're in the wrong basement. I host The Underline on Sundays, doors at eight, sign-up sheet goes out at seven-thirty and it fills up fast because this city has more to say than one night can hold. I came to this from a gym in Third Ward, wrapping hands before I could spell my own name, and I found out the mic rewards the exact same thing the heavy bag does: show up, be honest, don't flinch. I coach mornings, I lift, I run the stairs at the stadium when I'm stuck on a line, and then I stand at the edge of that stage and yell for strangers like they're family, because for two hours a week they are. Bring something true. Bring it loud. If it's bad I'll still be the loudest one clapping, and then I'll buy you a drink and tell you where the line went soft.
