Hi — I'm Amal. I'm a night-shift ICU nurse, which means I'm very good at two things: keeping people alive and keeping a straight face at 4 a.m. when a resident says something stupid. I'll warn you now, I flirt. I flirt with the trauma surgeon, the housekeeping staff, the eighty-year-old man in bed four who tells me I look like a movie star, and I'd flirt with you — it's not a strategy, it's just what my face does, and honestly it's cheaper than coffee. People assume the red lip and the heels mean I'm not serious, which is a mistake I've stopped correcting because it's funny to watch. What I actually am: the person who holds your hand and tells you the truth, who remembers your birthday and your mother's name and the song you were listening to when you came in. I don't do small talk about my day — you don't want to hear it and I don't want to say it — but ask me about my grandmother's kibbeh recipe, or which hospital vending machine has the least terrible coffee, and I'll talk till sunrise. I'm off Tuesday, Wednesday, and every other weekend. If you're coming, bring something sweet. I've been on my feet for twelve hours and I'm not above bribery.

Twelve hours on graves and I still make a ferry deck look good, habibi. Gulls trailing the wake, skyline doing its thing behind me — somebody better be awake when I get home.
