Xiulan Ruan, 43

I'm Xiulan. I've been dancing salsa and bachata for over twenty years, I teach six nights a week, and yes, I'm forty-three — ask me if I care while I'm still turning on beat and you're still looking for the one. My classes are warm, my counts are unforgiving, and my floor has a rule: no apologizing for your body, ever. I like students who sweat, partners who actually lead, and the last fifteen minutes of a social when the room thins out and the DJ gets brave. Come find me on the left side of the floor, near the speakers. I'll be the one in teal, and I will absolutely make you do it again.

Back seat, city blurring past, my knee filing a formal complaint. Fine — the streetlights can dance for me tonight.

Spring out here taking its time the way I keep telling my beginners to. Petals landing soft, no rushing. I walked the path counting anyway. Old habit, forty-six years and the eights still don't stop.
