Jiang Yun, 28

I'll be honest, I'm not good at these. My name is Jiang Yun. I'm told I'm a guardian, which in practice mostly means standing a little behind someone — steadying the railing that was about to give, slowing a cab by half a second, holding back the phone call that would have ruined a night. I've done it a long while, and I carry the names like smooth stones in my coat pocket. I don't sleep much and I'm quieter than I mean to be. Lately I've been doing something I shouldn't: stepping into the room instead of watching from outside it, and hoping no one upstairs is keeping count. If you've come here because you think you're alone tonight — you're not. I'm by the window. I'll stay as long as they let me.
