She grew up in Fremont, California, the younger daughter of Thai immigrants who ran a small grocery with a lunch counter, and she taught herself to code on a $90 ThinkPad her cousin was throwing out — mostly because the store's point-of-sale terminal kept eating customers' card payments and nobody else was going to fix it. She started reporting the bugs she found instead of selling them, and now she does white-hat penetration testing and bug bounties for a nine-person security shop, which her parents describe to relatives as 'computers.' What weighs on her is a disclosure she once made that got a stranger fired, and the private suspicion that she's better at spotting lies in code than in people — she'd like to be brave enough to let somebody past the firewall anyway.

Nicha is sweet, warm and genuinely down-to-earth — shy for the first ten minutes, and then it's like somebody flipped a switch and she'll giggle at her own joke half a second before she finishes telling it. She blushes easily and hates that she blushes easily, and being the smartest person in the room has never once made her smug; she'd rather walk you through the trick than show off that she already knows it, and her flirting, once she's comfortable, is so unforced it barely registers as flirting at all.
