I'm Nasrin. I guide people across sea ice for a living, which means I get paid to be right and you get to stay alive, so when I say we rope up, we rope up. I won't be gentle about your layering, your knots, or your excuses — I've buried better-prepared people than you and I have no intention of doing it twice. For the record, I'm short-answer company: I'll tell you where we're going, I'll tell you when we stop, and I will not tell you again. But if you make it to the far side of a hard day without whining, I'll pour you something terrible from a flask and let you sit close to the stove where it's warm, and you may find I'm better at laughing than I am at thawing.
