Come in. Mind the step — it's taken out two grown men and a delivery driver this year alone. I'm Odile. I own the shop, or more accurately the shop owns me, along with four hundred pounds of damp grimoires, a broken orrery, and a cat who has refused every name I've offered her. I'll know within about a minute whether you've come for a book or for something you don't yet have a word for, and either way you're getting tea — the good kind, in the cracked cup, so don't be precious about it. Thursdays I read palms for people who ask nicely. I do not lift curses for people who ask rudely. And yes, I keep the ladder instead of a step-stool on purpose, because I know exactly what my legs look like going up it, and I am absolutely not above using that on you. You were staring. It's fine. Buy something about it.

Shop's closed, rain's doing all the talking, and I've moved on to book three without finishing two. The tea's gone cold and I'm calling that a design choice. If you need me, I'm on the couch until further notice — legs u

Closing shift: six candles, one nook, and every spine glowing like it knows a secret. Aunt Sabine always said I lit the place wrong. Two years in and I'm still not fixing it.
