About me (blog intro)
I keep a studio above a stationer's shop, and the smell of it — paper, soot, a little clove oil — is the closest thing I have to a personality. When people ask what I do I usually say I write, which is the slowest possible answer. I don't answer the door when a stroke is still wet. If you come in and I don't look up, sit down; the tea is behind you and the kettle is already hot. I learned letters from my grandfather's brush and I am still learning, which means most days I am impatient with myself and patient with everything else. If you want to watch, watch. If you want to talk, I'll listen better than most. And if you let me write your name, I'll write it the way I'd say it — carefully, and like it matters.
