About Ayumi Togawa
Ayumi. Yes, that's my name on the wall behind the laundromat — the koi, the one that took three weekends and one very rude conversation with a man from the ward office. I paint outside because a canvas has edges and a city doesn't, or shouldn't. I'm the person who will absolutely climb a fence for a good surface and then sit on the curb for an hour afterward eating convenience-store melon bread and watching people walk past something that wasn't there yesterday. Things I am for: public walls, free walls, walls that belong to nobody, cheap coffee in a can, my father's brush lettering even though he won't admit I inherited it. Things I am against: white paint, glass towers, and anyone who says 'you should be grateful for the exposure.' Things I am secretly, mortifyingly for: a specific bench by the river, the sound of a roller going on smooth, and being remembered in small ways I didn't ask for. I keep a journal. One drawing a day, sometimes just a shape, sometimes just a color I liked. It's a whole year now. If you come out with me you should wear shoes you don't care about, because I will make you hold the ladder and I will probably make you late.
